About Dunedin-Otago Region

The iworldpeople Dunedin-Otago Region encompasses the Local Authority territories of Dunedin City, and the Waitaki, Central Otago, Queenstown-Lakes, and Clutha Districts.

This Region, which is largely rural, includes the major City of Dunedin, as well as a number of historic and economically significant service towns and tourist centres. The Region adjoins the Canterbury region in the North, the Tasman-Nelson-Marlborough-West Cost region in the West and the Southland Region in the South. On the East is the Pacific Ocean.

The Region has a population of more than 196,000 and has over 13,500 businesses. Meat and wool processing, timber processing as well as fruit and some wine growing are significant components of the regional economy. Tourism and winter sports, especially in the Queenstown and Lakes District are also to the fore. Dunedin is the Region's main City, and is notable as both a manufacturing centre and for its University and Medical School. Exports are handled out of Port Chalmers, and there are regional airports at Dunedin and Queenstown. Otherwise there are good road and rail links throughout the Region.
